Over the past few weeks, several readers have told us about their experiences with Windows Firewall Remote Desktop.
Repair your computer now.
How can I tell if my firewall is blocking RDP?
Really connect to the server, click the windows icon and type windows firewall in the search bar.Click Windows Firewall with Advanced Security.Click Inbound Rules.Scroll down to find the rule tagged RDP (or port 3389).Double-click the rule topic, then click the Scope tab.
Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is a proprietary protocol developed byDesigned by Microsoft to remotely connect to a Windows PC using a graphical user interface. RDP is built into Windows with evade. RDP listens on open TCP port 3389 and udp port 3389. This RDP software was previously called Terminal Services Client, but is now recognized remotely as a desktop connection. Come
Windows with a remote computer recovery desktop client that can be designed to remotely access the full Windows desktop environment. This is very convenient for customers who use multiple computers for work. One of our readers also asked about the RDP port, how to optimize it for security.
Open the Remote Desktop Connection client by selecting Run -> mstsc.
To put it simply, the default port when using the Remote Desktop Protocol is definitely 3389. This port must be accessible through the Windows Firewall in order to make things on the LAN accessible via RDP. If you want to access it over the internet (which is not secure), RDP mov must be directed Via the main internet router to make it work properly.
Let’s talk about how to open gate 3389 in the Windows firewall and usually in the router.
Allow RDP Port Through Firewall
- Go to Windows as the path to Windows settings (Windows key + i)
- Go to Update & Security -> Windows Security and click on Firewall and Network Protection in the list on the right. A new window will open.
- Click the “Allow iPhone App Firewall” link
Allow by software package firewall
- Click Change Settings
- Search for Remote Desktop in the list. It should normally be present by default. If it is not, you need to click the Allow button another application and go directly to:
- If the user wants to allow remote desktop only on the local network, check this box labeled “Private”. If it’s public, also check the Public box.
- Click OK for the changes to take effect.
Allow RDP Port Through Router (with NAT Translation)
Does Windows firewall block remote desktop?
Windows Firewall probably doesn’t allow Remote Desktop Protocol.
If you want to use Windows Remote Desktop over the Internet, you need to do two things:
- Allow the RDP port on the public network using Windows Firewall (or any other firewall) as we did in the previous step.
- Allow the RDP port through the router that gives you internet access, then broadcast incoming prt 3389 to the computer of your choice. Note
Please note that if you are connected to the Internet through a criminal IP address, you do not need the second step, but usually peopleand, using routers, are related to the Internet, including at home and at work.
How do I open firewall ports with remote desktop?
Step Step 2: Open the Remote Desktop port (forward 3389) in Windows Firewall. Go to your computer’s control panel, then to “System under this security”, then to “Windows Firewall”. Click “Advanced Settings” on the left. Make sure “Inbound Rules” for Remote Desktop is “Enabled”.
The configuration for breaking a port at the same time is different for a router. Since I use Kerio Control for my office network, we would like to walk you through the steps of using Kerio Control. The terminology should end the same for most modems, so you should be able to easily follow the same steps for your secure router.
- Open the router’s configuration page. This should normally be the default gateway. For me this tool is http://192.168.1.1
- After logging in, go to Rules of the Road -> Add New Rule
- Name your rules and keep them general. Save the action that might resolve it and click Next.
- Leave Source set to Any. This means users can connect to this port anywhere.
- Add a firewall to the target. You can leave it as is if you like.
- In the Services section, select the port and enter 3389.
- In the Translation section, enable Destination NAT, specify your computer’s IP address, and optionally specify port translation as 3389.
Change Default RDP Port
How do I allow remote desktop through Windows firewall?
Click Start | Switch.Click System and Security.Click Windows Firewall.Click Allow a program or feature through Windows Firewall.Scroll through the list of connected programs and features until you find Remote Desktop.click OK.
When you open RDP over the Internet, keeping the RDP port time set to 3389 is a security risk. It is always recommended to change the default port 3389 to something above 10000. I usually leave it at 30000 and 40000 which is pretty safe because port scanners will run from port 1.
If you want to change the RDP port, follow these steps:
- Select Run -> regedit to open the Registry Editor.
- Findthe following key:
- In the person’s right pane, double-click PortNumber.
- Change our value to decimal and enter a connection number between 1001 and 254535.
Make Sure Port 3389 Is Open And Listening
There may be times when you can open an RDP socket but can’t connect to remotely help you with your computer. In this case, make sure that you are allowed remote access to port 3389 (or any other port if you have swapped them). Follow these steps to make sure port 3389 is open and listening.
- Open PowerShell by selecting Run -> PowerShell.
- Run the appropriate command
tnc 192.168.1.2 -port 3389
